With the rapidly increasing use of the internet, this is becoming a primary communication and information facility even for the older generation. Now, an increasing number of clubs are setting up websites of varying complexity, and PAV has a growing list of club website URLs (uniform resource locator) on our links page. When deciding to tackle website creation, the principle issues are a) who does one ask for advice, b) what will it cost, and c) where does one start. The following are likely options:
Employ a professional consultant/webmaster. This may ensure an effective result but cost may be beyond the financial means of all but the largest and most prosperous clubs. There may or may not be ability for the club to create or amend pages.
PSPL offer a service through their website, and some clubs have chosen this option. This might result in less control, but this might suit clubs whose members have limited computer skills.
Decide to create a club website ‘in house’. There may be a range of ways to do this depending also on the complexity of the website content required. Some computer skills would be required together with internet access. However, the club may enjoy total control as to what is posted, and cost may be vastly cheaper.
One metropolitan club, Mont Albert Probus, has taken up the challenge as has created a simple, clear, and easily navigated website. With his committee’s approval, the webmaster Martin Nowell has given PAV an account of the various steps taken to create this website, and is happy to share this information. You may access the file on line
Cost was only $123 plus GST – a very manageable investment.
