PROBUS RENDEZVOUS 2012

will be held in New Zealand’s Palmerston North
from 16th to 21st September 2012

Note: be sure to post these dates into your Club's calendar!

Palmerston North is the main city of the Manawatu-Wanganui region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is New Zealand’s second largest inland city and possesses many attractive features.

Noel Hanlon, Chair of the organizing committee, says

"Every Rendezvous has its own unique character and that is the magic of having the 'Rendezvous' experience year by year.. For the Organising Committee, Rendezvous Palmerston North will be the culmination of an exhilarating period of planning.
For those of you coming to Palmerston North, it will be the opportunity to experience a truly heartland New Zealand experience by 'walking the country road' with us. The support of many Probus Clubs and members has enabled us to put together a week of memorable trips and compelling evening events. You will have the chance to visit places of varied interest in the countryside of the lower North Island. Nigel Ogle's Tawhiti Museum will leave you in awe. Stonehenge Aotearoa will take you on a journey back in time. The cruise on the PS Waimarie will let you sample river transport as it was. The steam train journey allows you to see some of the diversity of our landscape. The historic Oruawharo residence gives a glimpse of the lifestyle of New Zealand's landed gentry in the late 1800s. And the day out and about the local farming community showcases our family roots.
If that is not enough, shorter excursions highlight the area surrounding Palmerston North while still allowing you to get to know our city a little better. In your 'free time', sample the local cafe culture, shop, and visit our newly renovated Museum 'Te Manawa' - housing New Zealand's Rugby Museum and a splendid art gallery.
Each night you will have a chance to review the day's events in delightful surrounds, sampling local fare, and relaxing in the company of fellow Probians. Sounds too good to be true? Believe me it isn't!!
Until we meet in Probian friendship September 2012."

Travel to New Zealand

The organizing committee for the 2012 Probus Rendezvous have supplied the following travel information for the guidance of those Victorians planning to attend.

Be aware there is no direct air flight connection between the host city of Palmerston North and Australian capital cities.

Therefore, visitors will need to fly to Auckland or Wellington, and then take an internal Air New Zealand flight from either of these cities to Palmerston North. From Auckland, this involves a 1 hour flight and, from Wellington, a ½ hour flight. If travelling by coach from Wellington, this would involve a 2 hour journey. Auckland provides the widest choice of flights to Palmerston North.

It is therefore suggested that those attending the Rendezvous carefully check with a reputable travel agent so as to select the most convenient connecting flights.

On arrival at Palmerston North airport, the local committee intends arranging for pick-ups to take visitors to the city – around ten minutes drive. It may also be possible to have a welcomer to meet passengers arriving in Wellington.

Accommodation is within ten minutes walk of the city centre. This is also where the Convention Centre is situated, and where Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and the Gala Dinner will be held.
