Heritage Walk: Department Stores of Chapel Street Wednesday 1 May

Cr. Steve Stefanopoulos, Mayor of the City of Stonnington and Vice President of the PMI will take you for a wander along Chapel Street exploring former department stores big and small between Malvern/Commercial Roads and High Street.

This walk has booked out quickly in the past, so get in fast to secure your spot on this very popular heritage walk. Bring along your camera to capture some of the stunning examples of architecture along Chapel St.



Tour of the Toorak Mansion – Mandeville Hall Sunday 5 May

Come on a guided tour with architectural historian, and Mayor of the City of Stonnington, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos and discover the magnificent features and exquisite interiors and opulent rooms of this internationally significant mansion.

Mandeville Hall was recently featured in the Foxtel production of “Picnic at Hanging Rock” staring Natalie Dormer; the ABC TV production of “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mystery ” staring Essie Davis; and the upcoming Ned Kelly feature film entitled “The True History of the Kelly Gang” staring Russell Crowe and Claudia Karvan. The mansion features exquisite textured wallpaper; gilded ceilings; marble floors; hand painted scenery; brightly colored stain glass windows, and original furniture from the UK.



Guided tour of Malvern Town Hall Wednesday 8 May

Come on a guided tour of the Malvern Town Hall with the Mayor of the City of Stonnington, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos, and explore the beautiful interior architecture, which features Queensland maple panelled walls, terrazzo floors, intricate plaster ceilings and walls, and elaborate Victorian style staircase.

Commence the tour with an illustrated talk showcasing historic photographs of the Malvern Town Hall from 1886 in the Council Chamber.



Phonse Tobin: An Anything but Ordinary Life Thursday 9 May

Join PMI Victorian History Library and Stonnington History Centre to hear the story of Phonse Tobin who began Australia’s most successful family-owned funeral service company with his brothers – Tobin Brothers Funerals. From trapping rats for pocket money to being a long serving member of the North Melbourne Football Club committee, his life was rich with history.



Bridal Fashions of the 20th Century Monday 11 May

Join Nicole Jenkins as she presents an illustrated talk on changing bridal fashions of the 20th century: from the radical flappers of the '20s to the return to romance in the 2000s.




Mother’s Day High Tea Sunday 12 May

Enjoy a special Mothers’ Day High Tea in historic Mandeville Hall, one of the most lavishly-decorated of Melbourne’s 19th century mansions.

The mansion, now home to Loreto Mandeville Hall, a Catholic day school for girls, was extended in the late 1870s by Charles Webb for Joseph Clarke. Clarke enlarged the original 1869 12-room two-storey brick residence into a 30 room mansion. The ornate facade and front portion with grand entrance hall and conservatory, oak parlour, Indian room and exotic bathroom date from this period.



Heritage Walk: Malvern Civic Precinct Wednesday 15 May

Come on a guided heritage walk of the Malvern Civic Precinct with the Mayor of Stonnington and PMI Vice President, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos

Beginning at the base of the clock tower of the Malvern Town Hall, you will explore the Town Hall, nearby Police Station and former Court House; St George’s Anglican Parish (church, hall and vicarage); Stonnington’s only bluestone house; Waiora house; Malvern Square and sculptures; former Malvern Fire Station; former De La Salle College, Armadale; Malvern Tram Depot; St Joseph’s Catholic Parish (church, presbytery, hall and girls’ & boys’ schools); Tower Building (De La Salle College); former site of Kildara College and Brigidine Convent; Northbrook (house, ballroom and stables); MCG (Malvern Cricket Ground and pavilion); finishing at the former ES&A Bank.



Guided tour of the Stonnington History Centre, Northbrook Wednesday 15 May

Come on a behind-the-scenes tour of the working archives of the Stonnington History Centre. Stay on to view the History Centre's latest exhibition in the historic former ballroom.

The Stonnington History Centre manages the historic records of Stonnington Council and the former municipalities of Malvern and Prahran, and is housed in the Italianate villa Northbrook (designed by Charles D’Ebro and built in 1888-89), 1257 High Street, Malvern (behind Malvern Library). Hear about the history of this former home, see some of our precious records, and learn about the programs and resources available for conducting your own research.
